Food safety alert: FSSAI's simple test to detect starch in milk & its products
Hyderabad: In light of ongoing concerns about food adulteration in Hyderabad and across India, particularly in milk and dairy products, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has shared crucial information to help citizens ensure the purity of their food. With the festive season approaching, the FSSAI highlights the importance of avoiding adulterated sweets and milk.
The FSSAI took to its official X (formerly Twitter) account to inform the public: “Spot the Starch: This Festive Season, Don’t Let Adulteration Spoil Your Sweets! A Simple Test to Keep Your Milk Pure and Celebrations Safe! #EatRightIndia #FSSAI #NoToAdulteration.”
To assist consumers, the FSSAI outlined a straightforward method for detecting starch in milk and milk products such as khoya, chenna, and paneer:
Testing Method:
- Boil 2-3 ml of the sample with 5 ml of water (note: this step is not required for milk).
- Allow the mixture to cool, then add 2-3 drops of tincture of iodine.
- If a blue colour appears, this indicates the presence of starch.
This simple test serves as an effective way to identify adulterated food products and protect consumers from health risks associated with food adulteration. As the festive season approaches, it’s essential to remain vigilant about food safety to ensure a safe and joyous celebration.
