According to doctors, a 40-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital with Short Gut Syndrome, a medical disorder in which the body is incapable of absorbing adequate nutrients from the foods consumed.

Due to the medical condition, the patient was being fed through Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). He was also suffering from repeated central line infections and major central vein thrombosis.

The doctors attributed his condition to a previous surgery in which he underwent massive small bowel and right colon resection due to acute Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) occlusion, which caused extensive gangrene.

Following the surgery, only 30 cm of the proximal jejunum from the duodenojejunal (DJ) flexure remained. Given the severity of his condition and the lack of adequate intestine, a cadaveric small intestine transplant was performed successfully on April 19, 2025.

Post-surgery, the patient has made remarkable progress. He is now tolerating a soft diet orally, and his ileostomy is functioning well. A protocol endoscopy performed on the seventh post-operative day revealed pink, normal mucosa in the transplanted bowel while the biopsy confirmed no signs of rejection, the doctors added.
