Hyderabad: In a tragic incident on the evening of June 24, two members of a family drowned in a pond near Indira Sagar Cheruvu in Abdullapurmet. The victims have been identified as Chintan Reddy Indrasena Reddy, 20, and Pranitha, a 10-year-old girl.
According to the Abdullapurmet police, the family had gone to visit a real estate venture in the area. Pranitha, along with her parents and their relative Indrasena Reddy, had reportedly gone for a casual outing near the site.
While Pranitha was playing close to the pond, she accidentally slipped and fell into the water. Seeing her struggle, Indrasena Reddy jumped in to rescue her. Unfortunately, both of them drowned in the process.
Local authorities were alerted soon after the incident. A rescue operation was launched, and their bodies were later retrieved from the pond. Police said that the area is not designated for public recreation and lacks any safety measures or warning signs.
Speaking to reporters, officials said, “It appears to be a case of accidental drowning. The child fell into the pond, and the young man drowned while trying to save her.”
A case has been registered, and the investigation is ongoing. The police are also looking into the safety conditions around the pond and whether any negligence on part of the real estate venture contributed to the incident.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and statements from family members are being recorded.
The incident has cast a shadow over the area, with locals expressing concern over unsecured water bodies in residential and developing zones. Residents in Abdullapurmet have urged the authorities to ensure fencing or barricades around such ponds to prevent similar tragedies.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by unprotected water bodies, especially in areas frequented by families and children. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
