DRI seizes 6.5 kg pangolin scales, 4 held in Hanamkonda
HYDERANAD: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials from Hyderabad Zonal Unit seized 6.53 kg of Indian pangolin scales and detained four persons in Hanamkonda, Telangana, on October 4, 2025. The operation followed specific intelligence inputs about illegal trading of pangolin scales.
During a day-long surveillance operation, DRI officers intercepted the suspects and recovered the contraband from their possession. Preliminary estimates suggest the seized scales originated from about five Indian pangolins.
Trade banned under Wildlife Protection Act
The Indian pangolin (Manis crassicaudata) is listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which prohibits hunting and trade of the species and its derivatives. Its international trade is also banned under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Officials said pangolins are often poached for their scales, which are used in traditional medicines, particularly in China and Southeast Asia.
Further probe with forest department
After completing seizure formalities, the DRI handed over the four accused and the seized wildlife articles to the Forest Range Officer, Hanamkonda, for further investigation under relevant provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
