Surprise checks target daytime drunk driving in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Acting on the instructions of C.V. Anand, Director General and Commissioner of Police, the Hyderabad Traffic Police has begun conducting surprise daytime checks on July 16, 2025, to curb drunk driving across key locations in the city.

This initiative targets a growing trend of alcohol consumption during the day, particularly among drivers of two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and transport vehicles. While drunk driving is typically associated with nighttime hours, recent incidents and data suggest that a notable number of road accidents are linked to alcohol consumption during the day.

The traffic police are conducting these checks at accident-prone and high-traffic areas without disrupting the flow of vehicles. Individuals found driving under the influence are being booked under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and will be produced before court. Penalties include heavy fines, imprisonment, and suspension of driving licenses, either temporarily or permanently.

Officials have reiterated that driving under the influence is a serious offense that endangers not only the driver but also other road users. Routine checks will now continue during both day and night to improve road safety.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Hyderabad, urged commuters to avoid driving after consuming alcohol and cooperate with law enforcement.

As part of this effort, Tolichowki Traffic Police carried out a surprise drunk driving check on Tolichowki Main Road on July 11, 2025, booking four individuals between 3:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Hyderabad Traffic Police confirmed that similar unannounced checks will continue at different times and locations, focusing on areas with high accident rates.
