Hyderabad: Over the weekend of July 5 and 6, the Cyberabad Traffic Police conducted a special enforcement drive targeting drunk driving, resulting in the apprehension of 627 individuals.

The breakdown of cases across different types of vehicles revealed that the majority of the arrests involved two-wheelers, with 458 cases. Three-wheelers accounted for 39, while 116 cases involved four-wheelers. Fourteen heavy vehicles were also found to be driven under the influence.

The individuals caught were classified based on their Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels. Of the total, 548 individuals had BAC levels between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Forty-eight individuals had BAC levels ranging from 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml, and 31 individuals recorded BAC levels between 301 mg/100 ml and 500 mg/100 ml. All those apprehended will be presented before the court.

The Cyberabad Traffic Police has reiterated the seriousness of drunk driving. Drivers found to be under the influence and involved in fatal accidents will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (Culpable Homicide Not Amounting to Murder), which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine.

In a similar enforcement operation over the previous weekend of June 6 and 7, 362 individuals were caught driving under the influence. That operation also saw the highest number of cases involving two-wheelers, with 260 cases, followed by 24 involving three-wheelers, 73 involving four-wheelers, and five involving heavy vehicles.

In that drive, the majority of those caught had BAC levels between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Additionally, 30 individuals had BAC levels ranging from 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml, and 16 individuals had BAC levels between 301 mg/100 ml and 500 mg/100 ml.

Age-wise, the highest number of offenders was in the 31 to 40 age group, with 141 individuals. The 21 to 30 age group followed with 123, while 74 individuals were between the ages of 41 and 50. Seventeen individuals were between 51 and 60 years old, four were above 61, and three were in the 18 to 20 age group. No minors were involved.
