Cyberabad police book 490 for drunk driving in weekend drive
HYDERABAD: According to officials, the highest number of offenders were two-wheeler riders, with 384 cases. This was followed by 79 four-wheeler drivers, 20 auto-rickshaw drivers and seven heavy vehicle drivers.
Police said 432 offenders had blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml, while 42 had levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml. Sixteen offenders were found with BAC levels ranging from 301 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml.
All the offenders will be produced before court.
Section 105 warning
Officials reiterated that driving under the influence is a serious offence. They warned that if a person in an inebriated state causes a fatal accident, they would be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). The provision carries a maximum punishment of 10 years in jail and a fine.
Court disposals last week
Between September 15 and 20, a total of 199 drunk driving cases were disposed of in court. Out of these, 187 offenders were fined, while 12 were sentenced to jail.
Of those sentenced, four were jailed for one day, five for two days, and three for longer terms. Additionally, 17 offenders were directed to perform social service.
