Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has launched a fierce attack on Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and the Congress government over reports that the state may discontinue the free water supply scheme in Hyderabad, a flagship initiative of former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao(KCR).

Revanth Reddy’s Remarks spark controversy

CM Revanth Reddy hinted at possible changes to the free water supply policy, citing financial strain on the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB). Speaking about the issue during a media interview, Revanth Reddy explained the free water supply decision taken by former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) has impacted HMWSSB's revenue generation.

“The board, which has to take care of both water supply and sewerage system, took a dent as there is no revenue being generated through the services of supply water. There is no money with the board to undertake the sewerage works, which is leading to traffic jams and creating havoc,” he stated.

KTR’s warning

Responding sharply to these remarks in social media, Working President K T Ramarao(KTR) warned of severe consequences if the government proceeded with the proposed changes. Taking to X(formerly twitter)KTR said  “If you touch the free drinking water scheme provided by KCR to the people of Hyderabad, the people of Hyderabad will never forgive you. Revanth Reddy has already failed to fulfill his 420 promises in 20 months. Now, targeting a popular BRS scheme is a sin.

He accused the Congress government of incompetence, citing irrigation water shortages for farmers and mismanagement of Hyderabad’s infrastructure. “This government ruined Hyderabad’s brand with decisions like ‘HYDRAA’ and brought back power cuts, which were unheard of during BRS rule. Now, they want to take away free water while the city suffers from drainage chaos and damaged roads,” KTR added.
