Chiranjeevi faces backlash for desiring ‘grandson’ to continue his legacy
Hyderabad: Mega star Chiranjeevi has come under internet scrutiny for his ‘wishing for a grandson’ comment at a film event in Hyderabad on Tuesday evening. Social media users are divided after the actor said he wants his son (actor Ram Charan) to a give birth a male child who could carry his legacy forward.
Speaking at the pre-release event of Brahma Anandam in the city, Vishwambhara actor said that at home he is surrounded by his granddaughters and sometimes it feels like he is a “ladies' hostel warden.”
“When I'm at home, it doesn't feel like I'm surrounded by my granddaughters; it feels like I'm a ladies' hostel warden, surrounded by ladies all around. I keep wishing and telling (Ram) Charan, at least this time, have a boy so that our legacy continues, but his daughter is the apple of his eye... I'm scared that he might again have a girl,” the actor said.
Chiranjeevi’s son and actor Ram Charan married Upasana and the couple welcomed a baby girl Klin Kaara in June 2023. The mega star also has two daughters, Sreeja Konidela and Sushmita Konidela. Sreeja has two daughters, Naviksha and Nivrati and Sushmita is also a proud mother of two daughters – Samara and Samhitha.

Some netizens said they were disappointed with the actor’s comments while others supported him saying there is nothing wrong in wishing for a boy.
“Chiranjeevi is scared his son Ram Charan might have another daughter. In 2025, the obsession with a male heir continues. Disappointing, but not surprising. PS - I have a girl, and I have heard from hundreds of people to give birth to a boy next. It feels horrible when people want us to control things I can’t,” a user wrote on X.
“Celebrity like him should be cautious what to say in public. It's so,” a user commented.
“His grand daughter could also take his legacy forward. He only have to look at how his daughter-in-law and her siblings are successful in taking Apollo forward or Ashwini Dutt's children. Regressive thinking,” wrote another.
Meanwhile, Chiranjeevi has put an end to speculation about his return to politics. Reaffirming his decision to stay away from politics, mega star said his recent meetings with political leaders had no political motive. He asserted that his brother, Pawan Kalyan, is fulfilling their political aspirations as Andhra Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister and Jana Sena Party chief.
Notably, in 2008, Chiranjeevi launched the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP), and the party won 18 seats in the 2009 Andhra Pradesh elections.
