BYD to Invest ₹85,000 Crore in Hyderabad for EV and Battery Manufacturing
Hyderabad: The demand for electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing rapidly due to growing environmental concerns, government incentives, and advancements in battery technology. Consumers are opting for EVs because of their lower operating costs and reduced carbon footprint. To meet this demand, major automakers are expanding their EV offerings, making them more affordable and accessible. Additionally, the development of charging infrastructure is making EV adoption more convenient. As awareness grows and technology advances, the global transition to sustainable transportation continues to accelerate.
In a significant move, Chinese EV manufacturer BYD is set to invest ₹85,000 crore (approximately $10 billion) in Hyderabad, Telangana, to establish a large-scale manufacturing facility. Spanning 500 acres, the plant is expected to achieve an annual production capacity of 600,000 vehicles by 2032. BYD also plans to set up a 20 GWh battery production unit, which is expected to reduce manufacturing costs and strengthen its position in the Indian market.
This investment gives BYD a competitive edge over companies like Tesla, which is still in the process of entering India. Having already established a presence in the country, BYD is now focused on expanding its operations further.
To promote EV adoption, the Telangana government has introduced the Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy (2020–2030). Under this policy, electric vehicles registered in the state are eligible for a 100% exemption from road tax and registration fees. The policy applies to various categories, including two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, taxis, commercial four-wheelers, private cars, buses, and tractors. These incentives will be available until December 31, 2026.
To further support EV infrastructure, the Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO) is working to establish public charging stations, either independently or through partnerships. Efforts are also being made to ensure these stations operate using renewable energy, reinforcing the state’s commitment to sustainable mobility.
BYD’s investment aligns with Telangana’s vision of becoming a leading hub for EV manufacturing and energy storage. By attracting global industry leaders, the state aims to drive economic growth, generate employment opportunities, and promote clean energy adoption.
