BRS urges Women’s Commission to act on police brutality against ASHA workers
Koti: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has approached the Telangana State Commission for Women, demanding action against police for ‘brutal attack’ and ‘inhuman treatment’ of Accredited Social Health Activist(ASHA) workers during a ‘peaceful protest’.
The current salary of the ASHA workers is Rs. 9750 per month, which is insufficient for their work. During the election campaign, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, the then TPCC President, promised to enhance their salary to Rs. 18000 per month. Despite repeated requests, the government has failed to fulfill this promise.
During the protest dispersal, Sultan Bazar ACP K Shankar, CI Srinivas Chary, and male police officers allegedly committed severe violations. The workers claim they were physically assaulted, dragged across the ground, and forcibly pushed into police vehicles.
Accuses police of brutal attack’, ‘inhuman treatment and outrage of modesty
“The most disturbing part of the incident is ACP Shankar, CI Srinivas Chary and male police outraged the modesty of many female Asha Workers by slapping and pulling their sarees,” alleged BRS in their complaint. Further, BRS alleges in their complaint that male police personnel reportedly used offensive language and showed no respect for the workers dignity.
BRS leaders appealed to the Telangana State Women's Commission to investigate the matter thoroughly and take strict disciplinary action against the responsible police officers.BRS emphasizes the need to hold ACP Shankar, CI Srinivas Chary, and other involved personnel accountable.
These police actions violate workers’ rights and attack women’s dignity and safety. The brutal treatment has caused severe emotional trauma and psychological harm to the female workers. Strong disciplinary measures against responsible police personnel must be ensured to set a precedent that such behavior won’t be tolerated, added the BRS party.
