Hyderabad: To honour the contributions of Telugu freedom fighter Suravaram Pratap Reddy, the Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University Amendment Bill, 2025 was introduced by Health Minister Damodara Rajanarsimha Reddy on behalf of chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday.

Once the bill is passed by the members of the Telangana Assembly, the Telugu university will be renamed as Suravaram Pratap Reddy Telugu University.
During a discussion on Telangana Laws (change of acronyms) Bill, replacing TS for Telangana state with TG in the House last year, the chief minister told the Assembly that Communist Party of India (CPI) MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao had written a letter saying the former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao promised to rename the university.

Pratap Reddy was a journalist, writer and poet. Through his ‘Golconda Patrika’ newspaper, he continuously raised his voice against the Nizam’s oppressive rule in Hyderabad state.

The proposal to rename the Telugu University was after the expiry of clause in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014, which named Hyderabad as the common capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for 10 years.

Meanwhile, BJP leader and Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar has strongly condemned the Telangana Assembly's resolution on renaming the Telugu University. He termed the government’s move as an insult to Potti Sriramulu.

“We respect Suravaram Pratap Reddy for his contributions to the Telugu language. We have no objection to his name being associated with government programs promoting the language. But removing Potti Sriramulu’s name is an insult,” Bandi Sanjay said.

He added that we should not forget that Potti Sriramulu was a freedom fighter and a martyr who sacrificed his life for the formation of Andhra State.

Miffed by the Telangana government’s decision to remove Potti Sriramulu's name from the Telugu University, the Arya Vaishya leaders submitted a petition to Bandi Sanjay and expressed their objection to the renaming Bill presented in the Assembly.

On the occasion of Potti Sriramulu’s birth anniversary, the BJP leader paid floral tributes at his statue in Karimnagar town on Sunday.
