Arms license holders in Hyderabad to submit weapons for review ahead of election

Hyderabad Police are reviewing all arms licenses in the city and Secunderabad ahead of the upcoming Legislative Council election on April 23, 2025. This is being done in accordance with the Arms Act and Election Commission guidelines. A Screening Committee, led by the Police Commissioner, will determine if license holders need to deposit their weapons with the police during the election period. License holders will be notified of the committee's decision and will face penalties, including weapon confiscation and prosecution, if they fail to comply. Weapons deposited will be returned after the election on April 29th.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand has ordered a review of all arms licenses held by residents of Hyderabad and Secunderabad ahead of the upcoming Biennial Election to the Legislative Council from the Hyderabad Local Authorities Constituency, scheduled for April 23, 2025.

As per Section 21 of the Arms Act 1959 and the guidelines from the Election Commission of India (ECI), a Screening Committee will be set up under the chairmanship of the Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad. This committee will assess whether license holders need to deposit their weapons with local police stations or authorized arms dealers during the election period.

The final decision of the Screening Committee will be communicated to the license holders, and failure to comply with the instructions will result in penal action, including confiscation of weapons and prosecution under relevant laws.

License holders who are required to deposit their firearms will be allowed to reclaim them after April 29, 2025, following the completion of the election process.
