Ahmedabad plane crash: Air India flight crashes after takeoff; Telangana leaders express grief
Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed deep shock and sorrow over the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171, which was en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick. The aircraft went down shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, crashing into the hostel building of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad.
The Chief Minister extended his prayers for the safety and well-being of all passengers and crew and urged the central government to take swift and effective measures to support the victims and their families.
Former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) also expressed grief over the incident, particularly mourning the loss of several medical students who died when the aircraft struck the hostel mess area. He urged both state and central authorities to announce compensation for the deceased and ensure the injured receive the best possible medical care.
The Air India flight, operated by a Boeing 787-8, took off at 13:38 hrs carrying 242 people, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national. The airline has confirmed multiple injuries and fatalities. At least 20 students from BJ Medical College reportedly died in the crash.
Air India has set up a passenger information helpline at 1800 5691 444 and said it is fully cooperating with authorities investigating the incident.
Following the crash, all operations at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport have been suspended until further notice. Authorities have requested passengers to check with their respective airlines before proceeding to the airport. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing. Further details are awaited.
