Rs. 60,000 worth of liquor seized in Hyderabad, smuggled from Delhi at half Telangana's price
Hyderabad: Acting on a tip-off, the Excise Special Task Force (STF) police seized 35 bottles of liquor worth Rs. 60,000 near Secunderabad railway station on Tuesday. The accused, identified as Rajasekhar Reddy from Mahabubnagar, was caught transporting the bottles on a train from Delhi to Secunderabad.
The STF team, led by Chandrasekhar Goud and Kotamma, intercepted Rajasekhar Reddy while he was carrying 24 bottles of Red Label and 11 bottles of Defence liquor. According to the STF officials, the total value of the seized liquor is estimated at Rs. 60,000.
It is reported that liquor prices in Delhi are approximately half of those in Telangana, leading to the illegal transportation of alcohol from Delhi to Telangana by train. This illicit trade has been gaining momentum, with some individuals planning to take advantage of higher liquor consumption expected during the upcoming New Year celebrations. Many are purchasing liquor at lower prices from Delhi and Goa to resell in Telangana at a profit.
The Excise Enforcement Department is intensifying efforts to curb such illegal activities, conducting regular raids across the state. Excise Enforcement Director VB Kamalasan Reddy and Hyderabad Assistant Commissioner Anil Kumar Reddy commended the STF team for their swift action in seizing the non-duty paid liquor.
Authorities have warned that they will continue to monitor and act against illegal liquor trafficking to ensure public safety and compliance with the law.
In a separate operation on December 16, 2024, the Telangana Excise Department, in a joint operation with the STF, arrested six persons for allegedly smuggling Non-Duty Paid Liquor (NDPL) into the state from Madhya Pradesh. The STF police recovered 154 liquor bottles worth ₹2.5 lakhs being smuggled from Madhya Pradesh to Telangana. They also seized two cars, a bike, and six mobile phones from the accused.
Acting on reliable intelligence, the STF team, led by STF Excise Superintendent Anji Reddy, conducted a raid in the Chengicherla locality. During the raid, the police caught Tarun Verma, a resident of Chengicherla, red-handed while he was distributing a large amount of non-duty paid liquor in various areas of Hyderabad. The officials seized 40 bottles of liquor from his car.
Upon interrogation, Verma revealed that he had been involved in smuggling NDPL for the past few years. He further stated that the recent consignment of 154 liquor bottles had been smuggled from Madhya Pradesh. Subsequently, the police seized 70 bottles from another accused, K. Surender Reddy’s car in Rajendranagar.
Additionally, the STF officials seized 44 bottles of NDPL from the residences of two other individuals in Shaikpet and SR Nagar.
